Book Review: The American Resting Place by Marilyn Yalom

Yalom, Marilyn. The American Resting Place: Four Hundred Years of History Through Our Cemeteries and Burial Grounds. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2008.

Yalom has given us an interesting look at many different cemeteries across the United States. She begins her tour in Boston and makes her way along selected locations on the east coast such as Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Georgia. She then makes her way to St. Louis, Chicago, New Orleans, Texas and eventually to California and Hawaii. Although it fails to be comprehensive, it is representative. She discusses differences based on religion and ethnicity in burial practices as she visits each cemetery and notes the various types of markers. While her focus is on the locations mentioned, she does occasionally mention cemeteries that are similar in other parts of the country. For example, she notes that Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery was based on the garden approach used at Cambridge, Massachusetts' Mount Auburn Cemetery. The author included Hawaii in her treatment, but she failed to include Alaska, which I'm sure would have been another interesting location for treatment. She notes that most slaves were buried in forests and fields without markers or with simple markers such as stones and have been lost over time. She also points out that many of California's early Chinese persons were only temporarily buried in the United States, having been sent back to China for burial after a few years. It's an interesting look at cemeteries and burial practices. Her emphasis on the differences in burial practices based on religion and ethnicity is quite useful.  She includes notes for each chapter in the back of the book although they are definitely not comprehensive and are not keyed to specific passages. Her bibliography is probably more useful in the long run than the chapter notes. While there is an index with cemeteries and persons included, it fails to be comprehensive. (Spring Grove Cemetery is omitted.) The book is prefaced with a section of black and white photographs. While there are omissions, the book is still deserving of reading.

By Faith Alone by Bill Griffeth (Book Review)

Griffeth, Bill. By Faith Alone: One Family's Epic Journey Through 400 Years of American Protestantism. New York: Three Rivers Press, 2007.

CNBC anchor Bill Griffeth shares the story of his family's history in this short and highly readable volume. The author used sources from books to original records to the Internet in compiling his work, but the reader can tell that he has done his homework and that he has documented his research instead of simply relying on undocumented published trees. He has made extensive use of published local histories, some published family histories, church histories, church records, and religious works in bringing his ancestors to life. The author traveled to many of the places where his ancestors resided in order to understand their lives, and his experiences in these places are interwoven into the narrative in a way that does not detract from the story. I often read books written by journalists and am completely disappointed in them, but this is one book that far exceeded my expectations. The author's religious heritage is varied -- from the Puritans of Massachusetts, many of whom later became Congregationalists, to the Dutch Reformed and Presbyterians of New York, to Methodists, to the Christian Church, and even to the Catholic Church. As I read some of his narratives, I was certain that many of his Massachusetts ancestors probably knew some of my own ancestors because of the experiences that they shared, even though their names were never mentioned. Griffeth has done us a great service by producing a book that demonstrates the incorporation of local, social, and religious history along with the data genealogists collect to make ancestors come alive. I borrowed this from a friend, but I will definitely be purchasing my own copy as it is one that I want to own.

Cover Reveal: Pyxis and Alight

Hey guys,
So I have a cover reveal for everyone today and I couldn't be more excited about taking part. It's for the Pyxis Series by the incredible KC Neal.
I got an ARC of the first book last year and let me tell you it is a Must-Read. It's incredible and I am so excited for Alight. Well with the cover of Alight, Pyxis is getting a brand-new cover.
I didn't know how I felt about it at first because I adored the other cover. It was stunning!
BUT
I love this cover too it's so pretty.
So what do you think?

Blurb:

Corinne lives an average teenage life working at her dad’s cafe, hanging out with her best friend, and trying to forget a falling-out with her almost-boyfriend Mason. Then she discovers she and Mason are haunted by the same dreams of a dark force that consumes everything in its path. Pursued by shadowy figures and a dangerous woman with secrets from the past, Corinne must find out who her grandmother really was. In her quest to unravel her family’s history, she learns she is destined to protect this world--and the dark world of her dreams. She races to find the answers she seeks before her nightmares break free.

I loved this book so much! AND Pyxis is free, yes you heard me FREE, on Kindle today and tomorrow. Well what are you waiting for? Go grab a Copy.

So what do you think? It's so beautiful isn't it? So if you have a Kindle go grab a copy because this book is incredible.

So... Now to the part I've been waiting for since last year! The cover of the sequel Alight.
Well here you go
*drumroll please*

Blurb:
When Corinne learns who the second Guardian is, she must find a way to make peace with the last person in the world she wants to deal with. As she struggles, her nemesis unleashes an otherworldly evil, and a mysterious illness strikes Corinne’s friends. Faltering under the weight of her destiny, Corinne escapes to the dream world. There, she meets Zane, an Australian guy with a hot accent and a revelation that binds them together and alters the path of Corinne’s life. She throws herself into fighting for everything she loves, but just as she’s certain she will prevail, she’s robbed of what she needs most.

There are no words explaining how excited I am for this book. I adored Pyxis and can't wait to see what happens.

The #DAEMONINVASION Is Here!

The Daemon Invasion is HERE! Are you excited?

Over the last couple of weeks, you’ve heard us talking about the upcoming #daemoninvasion and we’re so excited to finally share with you what is going on.
Really excited.

The beautiful and uber cool models, Pepe Toth and Sztella Tziotziosz, who grace the Lux covers, will be joining us in the United States!  You heard right.  They are flying here, from Hungary to spend a few days as Daemon and Katy! While they are here, they will be working with Vania, from VLC Productions (the team behind Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, Melissa de La Cruz, Kimberly Derting, Moira Young, Kami Garcia and Margret Stohl, Hillary Duff, Lauren Destefano, and many, many more authors’ book trailers), to film book trailers for the Lux Series.

During the filming in Atlanta, they will be accompanying us on tour! What does that mean? You get to meet them. In the flesh. They will be participating in the signings and events. At those signings, we’ll be giving away signed posters, photos, and other swag. There will also be meet and greet events you can join in on.

At each signing, there will be advanced copies of Onyx given away!

And to top things off (as if this isn’t enough, but we don’t do anything small), there’s something very, very exciting in the works! It involves advanced copies of Opal, water, and a little destination known as the Bahamas.

I am not kidding.

This will be epic.

Aare you excited? I am! This tour is going to be so, so much fun, and I’m so thrilled that Pepe and Sztella are a part of it. We owe them a huge thank you and a giant welcome making the 16 hour flight to meet the readers of the Lux Series.  You!

From Goodreads: The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

This is a prequel and I am giving it 5 stars, which is very unusual for me. But to be honest this didn't feel like a prequel. I expected it to be short and a bit rushed, like many prequels are, but this was nothing like that. It felt like a short novella, we get to know how Dawson and Bethany met. And instead of it being rushed it is written in the same pace as obsidian. It was shorter than a normal book, but I actually didn't really notice it. It was just the perfect lenght to tell their story.

Just like Obsidian this book has that keep-reading-feel. I really liked the story. When you have read Obsidian you already know the global lines of what is going to happen, but reading and seeing the events develop is so much different. Dawson and Bethany become two characters, with their own personalities instead of just Deamons brother and his girlfriend.

I really liked getting to know Dawson and Bethany, they are so sweet and their relationship is just perfect. It's very different from the romance in Obsidian, but both romances are done very well. I felt like I really got an idea of who Dawson and Bethany were and we even get some more insight in the rest of the characters like Deamon. We get to see him from an entirly different perspective now and his behavior in obsidian suddenly makes more sense.

To conclude: I really enjoyed this book. I liked the story and the characters. I couldn't put it down and really enjoyed it. If you liked obsidian you should definitely read this book, although I think it's best when you read obsidian first. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!

From Goodreads:
16 years old Lacey was never the center of attention, unless she was tripping, stammering, or being deposited into a pool by the local popular kids. All she wanted was to fit in, until one night when everything changed.
Jade and Tasha, her two best friends, helped her create an online personality that was everything she wanted to be - and it was only the beginning. In doing so she attracted the attention of Henry, her lifelong crush and next door neighbor. Unfortunately it was Farrah her online personality and not herself he was interested in.
She also attracted Chase the brooding, quiet, anti-social new kid of Brownsburg High School, who easily figured out her secret and blackmailed her. They forged a friendship that was both unique and complicated.
Lacey must decide if revealing herself to Henry and her entire school as the cool, charming, and funny Farrah is worth possibly losing him forever, and she finds herself needing to make an even harder decision than she ever thought possible. When did the lines between truth and lies get so blurred?

Becoming a Butterfly is a story about coming of age and finding yourself when you never knew you were lost.

"I feel safe with Chase, like he sees me for who I really am, and who I want to be."

Mia has done it again. She has come out with another novel that I fell head over heels for. This book was so good and when I started it I meant to read a few chapters and then study for a bit. A few hours later no studying has been done but the book has been finished. It completely drew me it and I really loved reading this.

Lacey has always wanted to fit in but she stands out. She is the 'loser' girl and all she wants is to be liked. One night of fun and an online joke suddenly changes Lacey's life forever. In pretending to be her new online persona she attracts the attention of her next door neighbour Henry, a.k.a the guy she;s crushed over forever! But suddenly the joke is going on and Lacey wants Henry to like her for her, not some pretend personality online. But one lie leads to another and she finds herself in a web she cannot untangle. To complicate matters she has caught the attention of Chase, the new guy at school who sees through her lies and they start a new and strangely complicated relationship. Will Lacey be able to get out of her tangle of lies and how can she be certain it is worth it when what she's been waiting for may be standing right in front of her.

I really enjoyed this book. After reading Mia's other novels I couldn't wait to read this so when she sent me it for review I so did a happy dance and couldn't wait to start. I was expecting and amazing romance like her other book 'The Ocean' but I was very surprised. Sure it has romance in it but this book is about so much more than that. It's main storyline is being happy with who you are and self-discovery. I loved that the book was Lacey's journey of self-discovery and I couldn't put it down as I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen.

I really sympathised with Lacey. I can definitely relate, she was the loser at school who got ridiculed but all she wanted was to fit in. I think anyone can relate with that and it makes it very easy for you to sympathise with her. I definitely did. Half of the time I just wanted to give her a hug the other half I wanted to shake her and say "Open your eyes and see what's in front of you." I really enjoyed this book but I would have like to see a bit more romance between Lacey and Chase at the end.
All in all I thought it was great.

"You never needed that wig. You're perfect as you."
