Ira Lantz was born 16 July 1873 in Howard County, Indiana.
He first appears on the 1880 census with his parents, Samuel and Elizabeth.
1880 U.S. Census, St. Joseph County, Michigan, population schedule, Mottville Twp., p. 503B (stamped), s.d. 1, enumeration district (ED) 283, sheet 8, dwelling 83, family 84, Samuel Lantz household; Ancestry. com(http://www.ancestry.com : 18 May 2001); citing NARA microfilm publication T9, roll 603.

By 1900, he has married. We can be fairly certain that he married by 1896 based on the ages of his children in the 1900 census. The 1900 census identifies his wife as Mabel B. Jacob Lantz's compiled genealogy which does contain many errors identifies her as Mabel Mills. [Lantz, Jacob W., The Lantz Family Record: Being a Brief Account of the Lantz Family in the United States of America. (Cedar Springs, VA: The author, 1931.), p. 87.]
1900 U.S. Census, McPherson County, Kansas, population schedule, Superior Twp., p. 207A (stamped), s.d. 7, enumeration district (ED) 151, sheet 5A, dwelling 80, family 81, Ira Lantz household; Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : 24 Sept 2012); citing NARA microfilm publication T623, roll 488.

--, Ira V., son, W, M, Feb 1900, 3/12, S, Kansas, Indiana, Michigan
Following the family becomes a bit more challenging at this point. In the 1910 census, I have been unable to find Mabel and the children; however, I did find Ira. There are some discrepancies in the record. He's in Washington, D.C. in what I would assume to be a large apartment complex or hotel. I need to find something that will tell me what was at the address at the time. He is listed as single, and the mother's birthplace is wrong. The mother's birthplace could be an error on the enumerator's part in recording or in copying it. There are numerous possibilities as to why he is listed as single, but the most probable one is that it is simply because the informant did not know his family was still out west and not living with him.
1910 U.S. Census, Washington, District of Columbia, population schedule, Precinct 6, p. 115B (stamped), enumeration district (ED) 115, sheet 17A, dwelling 300, family 365 [i.e. 375], Iral Lantz; Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : 24 Sept 2012); citing NARA microfilm publication T624, roll 152.
Lantz, Iral, Head, M, W, 37, S, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, English, clerk, Interior Dept.
The next family finds him reunited with his children, but his wife is missing. He is still listed as "married," but it's possible that is erroneous and that he is already widowed. He has literally crossed the country. He is now found in Alameda County, California.
1920 U.S. Census, Alameda County, California, population schedule, Oakland Twp., Albany City, Ward 3, p. 66A (stamped), s.d. 5, enumeration district (ED) 162, sheet 10A, dwelling 207, family 207, Ira Lantz family; Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : 24 Sept 2012); citing NARA microfilm publication T625, roll 92.

--, I. Vernon, son, M, W, 19, S, Kansas, Indiana, Kansas, none
--, Elizabeth, daughter, F, W, 17, S, Oklahoma, Indiana, Kansas, none
From this 1920 census, I learned that Ira had been in Oklahoma around 1902 or 1903. I used that information when trying to locate the family in the 1910 census. I still was unable to locate them. I'd really like to ask Ira where he hid his family while he was clerking in the nation's capital.
1930 U.S. Census, Alameda County, California, population schedule, Berkeley City, Pct. 96, p. 115B (stamped), s.d. 8, enumeration district (ED) 297, sheet 15B, dwelling 261, family 284, 2430 Jefferson Street, Ira Lantz household; Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : 24 Sept 2012); citing NARA microfilm publication T626, roll 111.

Smith, Laura Lee W., boarder, F, W, 26, M, 23, Ohio, Kentucky, Ohio, Teacher, university
Ira was fortunate enough to be enumerated twice in 1940--once in Los Angeles and once in Berkeley.
1940 U.S. Census, Los Angeles County, California, population schedule, Los Angeles, 44 Assembly Dist., Carmalmame D9 ward, p. 1921 (stamped), s.d. 14, enumeration district (ED) 60-745, sheet 83A, visit T, Stowell Hotel, 416 S. Lantz, Ira, head, M, W, 68, M, California, same house, attorney, federal
--, Carrie, wife, F, W, 65, M, California, same house
We can assume that Ira married second wife Carrie sometime before 1835 since she was living in the same house in 1935.
Ira's death is found via the California death index. I will need to acquire the vital record in the future.
"California Death Index, 1940-1997," database, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 24 Sept 2012), entry for Ira Lantz. 10 Apr 1950.
Ira Lantz
Soc. Sec. #: none
Sex: M
Birth date: 16 Jul 1873
Birthplace: Indiana
Death date: 10 Apr 1950
Death place: Alameda
Mother's maiden name: Kennedy
Father's surname: Lantz
This death index does provide some support to his mother's maiden name although his children are likely the informants.
I really think that I need to visit the National Archives in San Francisco which has records of the General Land Office where Ira worked. I would also like to see if there are records of his time clerking in the nation's capital, but those will likely be in the DC area.

Blog Tour Brightest Kind of Darkness: Excerpt plus giveaway
Today is my stop on the Brightest Kind of Darkness blog tour. I love this series, the story is so original and I love the characters. I have already read both books, so I will post the blurbs and a link to my reviews. But I also have the excerpt from Brightest Kind of Darkness and a tour wide rafllecoptor giveaway. So enter for a change to win.
BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS, BOOK 1Nara Collins is an average sixteen-year-old, with one exception: every night she dreams the events of the following day. Due to an incident in her past, Nara avoids using her special gift to change fate…until she dreams a future she can’t ignore.
After Nara prevents a bombing at Blue Ridge High, her ability to see the future starts to fade, while people at school are suddenly being injured at an unusually high rate.
Grappling with her diminishing powers and the need to prevent another disaster, Nara meets Ethan Harris, a mysterious loner who seems to understand her better than anyone. Ethan and Nara forge an irresistible connection, but as their relationship heats up, so do her questions about his dark past.

And I have the excerpt of this awesome book that I can share with you:
LUCID: BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS, BOOK 2Once Nara combines her prophetic ability with Ethan’s power to outsmart Fate at his own deadly cat-and-mouse game, she’s more determined than ever to help Ethan learn the meaning behind the raven sword tattoo that suddenly appeared on his back after their confrontation with Fate.
During her quest to uncover the tattoo’s secrets, Nara enlists the help of some new friends and discovers her own surprising connection to Ethan.
While Nara digs deeper into the mystery, her desire for answers leads her down a dangerous path full of powerful and ruthless enemies. Swept into an age-old battle, Nara quickly learns that keeping one’s enemies close can be a necessary evil, making an intangible enemy she can control far more preferable to the human enemies she can’t.

It's no surprise to anyone how much I love Entangled Publishing books. I read a lot of them and I review a lot of them for Entangled. So when I heard about this new imprint of books coming from Entangled, The Bliss Imprint, I jumped at the chance to review them. Sugar Rush is the first Bliss book I've read and I have to say I am very impressed. I read it in one sitting and I loved every moment of it.
Dulcie is a struggling business owner and student. After her Mom's death Dulcie is left the family Candy store. As much as she loves to make her own candy she struggles to keep her Mom's legacy alive. When she is invited to take part in the Chocolatues competition where the prize money could help the store survive Dulcie is terrified to enter. How can she win and live up to the reputation her mother built when she hasn't been able to make any new candies since her mother passed. But when she is pitted against Nick, the drop-dead-gorgeous guy set to inherit the other big candy store in town Dulcie is determined to beat him. But will Dulcie and Nick be able to be competitive against each other when they are becoming more drawn to each other?
I really loved this book and I have to say Rachel Astor is a genius. This book had my two favourite things in the world in it. Romance and Chocolate. Seriously? What could possibly be better? I am now convinced that this woman is a genius. I swear I must have put on weight reading this book because man it was making me so damn hungry. Every time another candy was mentioned my stomach was rumbling and my mouth was watering. Basically the whole book just made me hungry.
Sugar Rush is just such a cute love story. None of this smutty all-sex-no-story stuff going on that you see a lot now. Thank God. I am a total hopeless romantic at heart and love anything remotely romantic and am always the person sat there going "AWWWWWWW" so it's fair to say I loved every moment of this book. Dulcie was such a great character. I loved her. She was the character that everyone can empathise with. She is so vulnerable at times yet she stays strong to continue her mothers legacy while she is so self-conscious and doesn't believe in herself much. So in everyone's life it's not going to be with a candy store but sometime everyone has had a time when they've doubted themself and with this book you see Dulcie's journey from being afraid to putting aside her fears of failure and just going ahead and doing something about it. I loved that about this book.
Sugar Rush without a doubt left me breathless. I was sucked into this amazing and delicious world of love and candy... seriously what could be better and I just couldn't put it down until I reached the end. Although then I was disappointed I had finished. If you love a good romance novel then this is the book for you. It will leave you all warm and fuzzy inside and it's a great quick read. I loved it.

From Goodreads:
There’s nothing quite like your first bite.
Dulcie Carter has been running her family’s homemade sweet shop, Candy Land Confections, on her own since her mom passed away. But business is slow and rent is high, so Dulcie knows if she wants to keep her mom’s dream alive, she’ll need a miracle. Winning the annual Assembly of Chocolatiers competition will change everything, if only she can overcome her fears and bring herself to create something new for the first time in a long time.
Then she meets Nick, a molten-hot guy with a sexy smirk and chocolate brown eyes. The attraction is stronger than any sugar rush—until she discovers he’s set to inherit his family’s big-box candy shop in town, which is her strongest competitor for first prize. Nick’s got his own reasons for needing the win, but then being around Dulcie is proving addictive.
As the competition heats up, so do the sparks between them. Can they keep their sights on winning, when love might be the sweetest prize of all?

Children of Samuel Lantz
I have decided to continue working with Samuel Lantz's family (see last week's entries) to bring it forward as much as possible with available records. In this post, I'm going to summarize some of the data from the previous posts. (The citations are available from those two posts.)
In the 1900 census. Samuel's wife Elizabeth is listed as the mother of 9 chilren, 7 still living. The two deceased children never made it onto a census. I will add those two (with rough citations) to the list.
Samuel and Elizabeth's nine children are:
1. Sidney F. Lantz (b. 20 May 1872, Howard Co., Ind.; d. 4 Aug 1872, Howard Co., Ind.; bur. Amish Family Cemetery, Howard Co., Ind.) [See http://www.khcpl.org/glhs/cemeteryIndex/ijkl.html ; I have a transcription from a cemetery book that I cannot find and which is apparently not in my database. The transcription itself was dated in 1968, as I recall. It is probably Gorman, James L. Cemetery Inscriptions of Eastern Howard County, Indiana: Including the Townships of Howard, Jackson, Liberty, Taylor, and Union. (Kokomo, Ind.: Selby, 1991). The cemetery is located at 400 N and 590 E and is sometimes also called Lantz Cemetery. It is very small. I have been unable to locate this cemetery on more than one visit. All the recorded burials in this cemetery are related to me.
2. Ira Lantz (b. 16 July 1873, Howard Co., Ind.; d. 16 July 1873, Alameda Co., Calif.) - I'll be providing documentation on him later this week.
3. Nancy Selina Lantz (b. 11 Jan 1875, St. Joseph Co., Mich.)
4. Ora Rebecca Lantz (b. 22 Oct 1876, St. Joseph Co., Mich.; d. 1907)
5. Levi Joseph Lantz (b. 18 Sep 1878, St. Joseph Co., Mich.)
6. Elmer J. Lantz (b. 26 Oct 1880, St. Joseph Co., Mich.)
7. Maud Lantz (b. 20 Dec 1882, Johnson Co., Mo.; d. 25 Jul 1884, Johnson Co., Mo.; bur. Holden Cemetery, Johnson Co., Mo.) [Email from Daynell McCall, 15 June 2002. She is a descendant of Maud's brother, Levi Joseph. Maud is not included in this cemetery at FindAGrave.]
8. Budd Lantz (b. 20 Dec 1882, Johnson Co., Mo.)
9. Jessie Mabel Lantz (b. 2 Jun 1890, prob. Madison, Greenwood Co., Kansas)
I'll be reporting findings on each child in later posts with the exception of the two who died young.
