Intuition: A Bonus INTANGIBLE Short Story

Luke and his twin sister Sera have unusual abilities. Hers is a gift—she can heal with a touch of her hand. His is a curse—he can see the future but he can’t do anything about it.

On a hike up the mountain, Luke has a vision unlike any other—one that leaves him terrified. Knowing that it will come true—and that he must do everything in his power to stop it—leaves his own future uncertain.

Don't miss the first book in the series, INTANGIBLE, on sale January 2012.

This is a short story or prequel before the first book. We get to know the two twins Luke and Sera. They both have unusual gifts, Luke can See visions of the future and Sera can heal people. The twins make a walk in the mountain and we get to see both their gifts in action. We get a sense of how close they are and who they are. The story ends when Luke realises that his last vision is a bad one involving Sera, but he never has been able to stop his visions from happening.

It is a nice prequel and we get to know both of them but it is so short that you still don't get a real sense of the book. It did make me curious about the first book and I will definitely be reading it. It sounds like an original story and I love original stories. I think it is a nice story to read before the first book, because we already get to know the two main characters a bit.

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it.

I got this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I really liked this book. I was a bit surprised by how much I ended up liking this book. Intangible is a very original and intriguing story. The story is about the twins Sera and Luke, they both have special powers. Sera can heal people and Luke can see the future. The book starts when Luke get's a vision of Sera dying and his visions are never wrong. Contrary to what the blurb suggests these is more to the book that just Luke trying to prevent his vision from happening. Many things are happening and we are introduced to a very interesting world with many interesting characters. I am not going to spoil anything about the storyline, because I liked the surprise. The book was very different from what I expected.

The story is really good, it kept my attention and when I was not reading the book I kept thinking about it. I wanted to know what would happen and I just wanted to keep reading. This book certainly has that keep-reading feel. There were some parts that were a bit slow but I really liked the story. It was original and intriguing.

The characters were really great. I had the feeling I really got to know them. Especially Sera, I really liked her and we get to know many of her feelings and ever what her hobbies are. I really liked her. On the contrary I would've liked a bit more information about Luke. Where the short story is told from his perspective, this is mostly told from Sera's perspective.
This brings me to another point, this story is told from multiple perspectives. I always like is when stories are told from multiple perspectives, because we get to know more characters and why they act a certain way. It gives the story more depth and I really liked it. Every character has his secrets, but die to the multiple perspectives the reader does get a sense of who everyone is and why they act like they do. I think the characters are certainly one of the strong points of the book and I really liked getting to know them all. The main point of the multiple perspectives is that at the beginning it always takes some getting used to.

There were only some minor points that bothered me about the story. I found some of the action quite strange. There are some battles, but I found that some people just won a bit too easy and this wasn't believable. Also I think it was strange that when one of the characters holds a knife for the first time she is immediately able to deal damage with it, I think fighting is something you must learn and the first time you use a weapon it isn't that easy. I also found the ending a bit strange, I expected more of it. More I wont say because I don't want to spoil the anything. There are many questions left unanswered by this book, but I am sure we get most of those answers in the next book.

To Conclude:
I really liked this book. The story was great and I just wanted to keep reading. I also really like the characters and the multiple perspectives which gave us an idea of who everyone was. There were some small minor details I didn't like but overall this was a great books and I really want to read the next book.

Hide & Seek (Games of Zeus #1)

Hide & Seek (Games of Zeus #1)

Publication Date: March 1, 2012
Date Read: January 29, 2012

Format: eBook

From Goodreads:
Lie, cheat or steal, no one can catch Tripp Fox. Except one woman.

Lexi Shepherd’s knack for finding whatever is asked of her isn’t sheer luck. It’s a gift from the Greek god Zeus.

That Lexi doesn’t use her ability to search for “Mr. Right” comes from one of many personal rules she has set for herself. Number one is not to let fate dictate her future.

Falling in love with Tripp breaks all the others.

Despite her principles, Lexi’s unable to stay away from the bad boy, and she finds herself toeing the grey line of the law for him.

Zeus, though, didn’t give Lexi and Tripp their talents to make their relationship a simple, easy alliance. He designed it to be exactly the opposite. Impossible. Always.

With their separation, Lexi expects Tripp to forfeit love in favor of destiny. He, on the other hand, intends to beat Zeus at his own game. With a plan in place, Tripp challenges Lexi to take the one action no one else can.

Find him.

The question isn’t can she ... but will she?

Wow! I don't even know what to say. I have never read anything by Aimee Laine before this book and I have to say I am now a fan. This book completely blew me away. I could not put it down and I ended up reading the whole book in 1 day.

Lexi has a god-given gift. She can find anything just by thinking of it or looking at a picture. It's not any god-given gift, it's from Zeus. She has high morals and she won't use her gift for personal use. Then she meets Tripp. Tripp also has a gift from Zeus, he is Lexi's complete opposite. He's the bad boy while she is the good girl but when they meet sparks fly. Literally! Will they be able to put aside their differences and fight for their relationship? Even if it means fighting the Gods?

I absolutely love books about mythology. I really love them but most mythology books I have come across have all been YA so when I heard about this I couldn't wait to read it. I have to say this is one of the best mythology books I have ever read. It completely blew me away and I could not stop reading.
Aimee's amazing writing style completely sucked me in from the first page and I was completely hooked. I loved every moment of this book and when I had to do something else all I wanted was to go back to my kindle and read some more.

Lexi is such a fantastic character, I really loved her and I loved seeing the struggle she went through in this book. She had to struggle between her feelings and her morals and I loved seeing her journey throughout the book and how she worked through everything.
Tripp, oh Tripp. When I first finished this book, if I had wrote my review then it would have just been, Tripp...... HOT! Yummy! He is definitely all of these things. He is the perfect book boyfriend and every girl will fall head-over-heels in love with him. I know I did. He is the bad boy and really what girl can't resist a bad boy? But then the more you read the more you see his softer side, he's sweet and romantic and Aimee mixed the loving guy and bad boy perfectly. I just love Tripp and I wish he were real! I know... I say that about every fictional guy, but really? I want them to be real.

I genuinely loved this storyline that Aimee has come up with and I cannot wait to read more of this series and see where Tripp and Lexi's relationship goes from her. To me this book had the perfect ending and I would be perfectly happy if this was a stand-alone novel but I am so excited to read the rest of the series.

I just want to say a huge thank you to J. Taylor Publishing for letting me review this book. It was fantastic and I know I will read it again and again and never get bored of it. It's not possible to get bored of Tripp.

Half Black Soul (Alexa Montgomery Saga #2)

Half Black Soul (Alexa Montgomery #2)
H.D Gordon

Publication Date: January 31, 2012
Date Read: January 28, 2012
Source: Review Copy from Author
Format: eBook

From Goodreads:
In the past few weeks Alexa Montgomery has had her entire world flipped upside down. She's gone from living a semi-normal teenage life to a life full of vampires and werewolves who all expect her to deliver them from the control of an evil dictator.

Alexa is the last of her kind; a Sun Warrior, and now she has left the safety of Two Rivers to search for her mother, but she's left her sister behind to do so, and Nelly is the one person that she was told that she must always protect. Kayden, a vampire who is Alexa's other half, has followed her on her journey. But, secrets are about to come out, relationships will break and danger lies just up ahead. Will Alexa be able to get through all of this and make it out alive? And, will she be able to protect Nelly from danger when she is so far away?

*Spoilers from Blood Warrior in this review. If you haven't read Book 1 you may not want to read this review.

*Squeel they used part of my review for the blurb =D

Wow! This book was definitely not what I expected at all. I really loved the first book in the series, Blood Warrior and HD blew me away with her writing and her story in that but Blood Warrior is nothing compared to this book. It is a million times better and there's so many twists and turns I was shocked at the things happening.

Alexa has left the safety of Two Rivers to go find her mother. Along with her is Kayden, her other half, the Libra to her Warrior and he will do whatever it takes to protect her. But by going on her quest, Alexa has left behind her sister. The one person she was told to always protect. Secrets will come out, relationships will break and danger lies just ahead. Will Alexa be able to face all that she does and come out of it alive? And will she be able to protect Nelly from danger when she is so far away?

I absolutely loved this book. There were lots of twists and turns and most of the way through it I was shocked by the secrets that came out. I really loved that we say a different side to Nelly. Book 1 was told from Alexa's point of view but this book was told from two points of view, Alexa and Nelly. I really loved that we had these two points of view as we really saw a different side to Nelly. The perception I got from book 1 is that Alexa has this dark side to her character and she really struggles with it throughout this book. But what I didn't really expect was for us to see a darker side of Nelly. Nelly and Alexa have always been so different and come across as one being incredibly strong and will stop at nothing to protect the people they love while the other was seen as more gentle and loving. In Half Black Soul we really see that they are more similar than first thought. Nelly is just as strong and while we always knew Alexa would do anything to protect Nelly even kill for her we see that Nelly feels the same way about Alexa.
You really see a different side to not just Nelly but all of the characters. Jackson really took a backseat in this book but that doesn't mean he is less important to the story. I was shocked to find out some of the secrets in this book and it's fair to say that after this book none of the character's relationships will ever be the same again.

Half Black Soul is really so different than Blood Warrior and it explores much darker themes than the first one. It was brilliant and the first book seems insignificant compared to this one.
If you haven't read Blood Warrior this is not a series to be missed and I would suggest this series to anyone who loves YA Paranormal Romance.
Throughout reading this book This Song kept coming into my head and I really think it's the perfect song for this book and I think it really portrays the things going on this book perfectly.
I genuinely loved this book and I cannot wait for the next book. I really think this series is going to just get better and better. HD has definitely surpassed herself with this book and I cannot wait to read the next one in this series.
Phenomenal!

Book Review: Proprietary Records of South Carolina

Bates, Susan Baldwin and Leland, Harriott Cheves, eds. Proprietary Records of South Carolina. 3 vols. Charleston, SC: History Press, 2005-2007.

Did you have ancestors in South Carolina before the end of the 17th century? If so, History Press has a three-volume work that is absolutely essential for researching the earliest period of the province that eventually became the eighth state admitted to the United States. Susan Baldwin Bates and Harriott Cheves Leland have painstakingly abstracted some of earliest land and estate records of the state.

Volume one focuses on Abstracts of the Records of the Secretary of the Province, 1675-1695. The introduction provides important information about the record group as well as the editorial process. The largest portion of the book contains abstracts. The records contain land claims, estate administrations, bonds, releases, estate inventories, wills, marriages, and other assorted items of tremendous genealogical and historical value. There is a small section of color plates illustrating some of the records, including a couple of maps. The appendices include a list of provincial secretaries and a list of settlers taken from a map, There is a glossary, a list of titles used during the proprietary period, a bibliography, and an index of places and people.

Volume two contains Abstracts of the Records of the Register of the Province, 1675-1696.  The introduction provides information about the office of the register, the land grant process, and headrights in addition to the record group itself. The majority of the book contains the records themselves. There are land grants, deeds, business records, indentures, receipts, wills, quit rents, and other miscellaneous items among the records. There are a few color plates illustrating the records and showing some of the maps in the record group. The appendices contain a listing of those serving as provincial registers and lists of settlers from two maps. There is a bibliography and an index of places and people.

Volume three contains Abstracts of the Records of the Surveyor General of the Province, Charles Towne, 1678-1698.  The introduction provides important information about the founding of Charleston, about the office responsible for these records, and about the records themselves. The records themselves consist chiefly of land warrants. There is a section of color plates illustrating records, plats, and maps found in the record group. The appendices consist of a list of the surveyors, histories of specific lots in Charleston, and the surveyor's notebook. There is a bibliography and an index of places and people.

These three volumes are indispensable for those researching South Carolina's early history and for those researching the lives of early settlers of South Carolina. Researchers are fortunate that a publisher such as History Press is willing to publish volumes such as these which have a more limited audience to make them widely available for historians, genealogists, and other interested persons.

Note: The three volumes were provided by the publisher for review.

Book Review: The Dead Beat

Johnson, Marilyn. The Dead Beat: Lost Souls, Lucky Stiffs, and the Perverse Pleasures of Obituaries. New York: HarperCollins, 2006.

As a genealogist, I am quite familiar with obituaries. I use them all the time to add evidence in support of a date or relationship. The type of obituary with which I am most familiar is the one that is written based on a template which survivors complete at the funeral home as part of the package deal. This is not the type of obituary that the author of this book devours. Instead, she sings the praises of professional obituary writers employed by some newspapers who write the obituaries of famous celebrities as well as lesser known persons. Apparently this type of obituary has a somewhat cult-like following. The writers themselves know who is old and hasn't passed away yet, who is in poor health and could die at any time, etc. and begin researching so that they need only add the pertinent details of the death to their prose. Different obituary writers even employe different styles which the author has categorized. I fear that this author would include the type of obituary that I most enjoy in her classification of obituaries that read more like a telephone directory. The writer concentrates so much on her favorite type of obituary that she almost neglects to mention the reasons most people read the obituaries in their local papers--to make sure they are not among the deceased and to see if any of their friends have passed away. In spite of its weaknesses, this book does provide insight into persons obsessed with reading (and writing) obituaries of this type.

Working Stiff (Revivalist #1)

Working Stiff (Revivalist #1)
Rachel Caine

Publication Date: October 31, 2011
Date Read: January 27, 2012
Source: Review Copy from Allison and Busby Publishers
Format: Paperback
Pages: 473

Bryn Davis knows working at Fairview Mortuary isn't the most glamorous career choice, but at least it offers stable employment--until she discovers her bosses using a drug that resurrects the clientele as part of an extortion racket. Now, Bryn faces being terminated--literally, and with extreme prejudice.

Wit the help of corporate double-agent Patrick McCallister, Bryn has a chance to take down the bigger problem--pharmaceutical company Pharmadene, which treats death as the ultimate corporate loyalty program. She'd better do it fast, before she becomes a zombie slave--a real working stiff. She'd be better off dead...

I really don't know where to start with this review. Working Stiff is definitely not what I expected it to be and most of the way through the book I couldn't decide whether this was a good thing or a bad thing.

Bryn thinks getting a job at Fairview Mortuary will be a positive thing on her life. The job is stable and it has a decent wage. What she doesn't count on is there being a big secret behind the Mortuary and she finds herself smack down in the middle of it which could be dangerous for her. Her bosses are using a drug to revive the dead, will she be able to stop them without risking her own life.

I have to say that this is in no way anything like Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series. If you are coming into this book with her Morganville series in mind prepare to be a little disappointed. This book is in no way bad and by the end I enjoyed it but I was quite disappointed with this book. Rachel Caine is a fantastic Paranormal author so when I heard about her 'zombie' series coming out I couldn't wait to read it. I thought there would be a supernatural twist on zombies. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was actually quite disappointed to find that in this book there is a very scientific explanation for it. Don't get me wrong I like books where the author has done the background research and finds a real-life way to explain it. I absolutely adored "Feed" by Mira Grant and that is a very scientific take on the zombie novels but it is definitely not what I was expecting from Rachel Caine.

I found this book very slow going to start with and it did take me quite a while to get through it and I found myself plodding through it just to get through it. However the more I read the more I started to really enjoy it. The storyline for this book is superb and it's a really brilliant idea. I think my negative feelings toward this book are more because of what I call "First Book Syndrome" rather than the actual book. In a lot of series I find that the first book is setting the basis for the rest of the series and I don't enjoy it as much. However when I have read further on in the series I end up really loving them.

As much as I struggled with the book to start with, I did end up enjoying it and most of that is to do with the characters. I always love Rachel's characters and this is no exception. I loved Bryn. The things she has to face in this book I don't think anyone could deal with as well as Bryn does. She is so strong and there were things in this book that shocked and disgusted me but at the same time I could not stop reading. I really loved watching the characters relationships develop and I loved seeing a hint of romance blossoming at the end. I really loved Patrick. At times he's ruthless and I wanted to hate him but I always saw that softer side to him. Him doing what had to be done but not really liking it. I loved that Bryn brought out the real him and saw a side to him that nobody else saw. I just really love all of Rachel's characters and having a cute dog called Mr. French in there helped too. What can I say? I'm a sucker for dogs with cute puppy eyes.

I will definitely be reading more of this series when it is out and I think it will just get better and better. The beginning of the book was slow but the events and action towards the end of the book definitely made up for it.
I think it's a great storyline and a promising start to a original and interesting series. I can't wait to see what happens and how Bryn and Patrick's relationship evolves from here.

Book Review: The Diary of a Southern Lady

Jones, Katharine, ed. The Diary of a Southern Lady: Georgina Francis Barrett Devlin, April 18, 1852-February 19, 1912. North Charleston, SC: CreateSpace, 2011.

This diary details the everyday life of Georgina Francis Barrett Devlin of Yazoo City, Mississippi. The diary writer was born in England in 1825 and died in Yazoo City in 1914. The diary makes frequent mentions of persons with whom the subject associated. The editor has added footnotes to assist the modern reader in identifying some of these individuals. There is a gap between 1881 and 1895 where most of the diaries have been lost. The editor has also included extant letters and other notes that are relevant to the life of the diary's author. Based on her record of expenditures included in the diary, the individual who wrote the book was probably more affluent than most of the persons residing in the area. She does, however mention individuals who took music lessons, who rented from her, who did her laundry, etc.

As with most self-published works, there are a number of problems with the work. The one that irritated this reader the most is the numbering of the footnotes. Rather than using consecutive numbering within the chapter, the author restarted footnote numbering on each page. Another problem is in the identification of sources. At the end of the book, the editor has includes a few obituaries, but does not indicate the source for these items. Another problem is with documentation of genealogical data. The editor includes a brief genealogical outline of the family, but does not provide documentation for dates and other included information. While there is a list of persons mentioned in the diary, there really needs to be a comprehensive every name index to the book.

In spite of the problems mentioned above, if you had relatives living in the Yazoo City area during the time periods included in the diary, you will want to read this to get a feel for life in the city at that time and to see if your relatives interacted with Mrs. Devlin.

Note: This review is based on a copy of the book provided from the author for review. Copies of the book may be purchased from Amazon.com.

Dusty Reads (#1)

Dusty Reads is a weekly meme hosted by xpressoreads.
This is where we feature a book that has been sitting unread for a while.
I finally decided to join in Dusty Reads because let's be honest I have hundreds of books that have been sat there unread for a loooooooooooong time.

From Goodreads:
Meet Susannah Simon: she's a typical teenage girl who just happens to be a ghost-hunter...oh, and she's also dead-over-heels for Jesse - the sexiest spook ever! But can this girl get her ghost? In "Grave Doubts", Suze has to contend with fellow ghost-hunter, Paul Slater, who gives her a deadly ultimatum. Unless she dates him, he'll send Jesse into the afterlife - for good. Paul may be totally hot, but Susannah Simon will not be bossed around. Let the games begin...In "Heaven Sent", all Suze's dreams have come true - she's finally dating the most gorgeous ghost of all time, Jesse! But when her creepy admirer threatens to travel back in time and stop Jesse from dying, Suze is distraught. Will her new boyfriend choose life or love?

I bought this book when it first came out in August 2010. I had read the first two bind-ups in this series and really liked them and I couldn't wait for this one to find out how the series ended. It's still sat unread on my shelf 2 years later. I really can't wait to read this and find out how it ends but since I read the first 2 bind-ups 2 years ago chances are I will re-read them before I read this. Hopefully I will read it this year.

James Joyce |

Hey everyone and welcome to my stop on the Airel-Arson-Pyxis Blog Tour

First of all you want to know about the books touring right?
Of course you do! That is after all why we are here.

Airel by Aaron Patterson and Chris White
Buy It: Amazon US / Amazon UK

Airel is a story about an angel who falls so deeply in love with a woman that he chooses to fall from heaven to be with her. She gives birth to a daughter in Arabia, 1250BC. The girl is pursued ferociously, relentlessly by an enemy in the deepest darkness. In present day Boise, Idaho is just a girl: Airel. She's just your average high school student... who turns out to be anything but average. It's because of who she is, because of her ancestry, because of her lineage. Past and present crash in on each other in the final pages of what has been twisted comes dangerously unraveled.

Arson by Estevan Vega
Buy It: Amazon US / Amazon UK

Arson Gable feels like a freak. He can create fire. He never asked for it. He never wanted it. But he can't shut it off. Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl - who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin - moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. Using what he fears most about himself, Arson must face him consuming past and confront the nightmare that is his present as he walks the fine line between boy and monster.

Pyxis by K.C Neal
Buy It: Amazon US / Amazon UK

Corinne lives an average teenage life working at her dad's cafe, hanging out with her best friend, and trying to forget a falling-out with her almost-boyfriend Mason. Things take a strange turn when she uses her late grandmother's food dyes for a bake sale, and her customers suddenly find her irresistibly alluring. Then she discovers she and Mason are haunted by the same dreams of a dark force that consumes everything in it's path. Pursued by shadowy figures and a crazy woman with secrets from the past, Corinne must find out who her grandmother really was. In her quest to unravel her family's history, she learns she is destined to protect this world - and the dark world of her dreams. AIREL. KEEPING IT REAL.
by Aaron Patterson
I read a lot of books and the one thing that annoys me is how the hero seems to always do the right thing or once they make a decision they stick with it. If you are like me and a human, we do things we know we shouldn’t and make a plan only to break it or change our minds.
I didn’t want Airel to be like this and some people get it and some do not. But she is real, she tends to do something stupid knowing full well it is the wrong thing but she just can’t help herself. I like this about her and sometimes it is frustrating to watch her walk into a dumb situation but it makes her more real.
I like her the way she is, faults and all… to me that is what makes her so darn adorkable!

EXCERPT:

There, standing two feet from me, was Michael Alexander. My heart jumped and — I swear — it stopped. Now he was right in front of me, with a slight smile on his face. He had the most gorgeous crystal blue eyes I had ever seen in my life. I didn’t know how I kept from fainting.

Kim stepped into the middle of all of us, cutting in between us. Some other jock guy I hadn’t noticed was standing next to Michael. “Hi, I’m Kim… you new to town? How do you like it here?” I groaned, hiding my face behind my locker door, secretly peeking out, wondering what I did to deserve this. Kim and her big fat mouth.

Michael looked at her, then around her, in my direction, and smiled. “Hey, I’m Michael Alexander.” Clearly, he was answering her politely, but not talking to her at all. I looked at him from behind my locker door and flushed.

“Michael…” Kim said, as if pondering his name for the first time. “Good to meet you! This is my friend Airel.” She pointed to me and I could see the wicked smirk on her face. I was going to kill her. Murder, kill — and then for sport — unfriend her on Facebook.

“Hi…” I trailed off. Yep. I said, "hi," and probably sounded like I had some disease — which I wasn’t ruling out just yet. Nothing cool. Nothing memorable. Just, "hi." I tried to say my name but Kim had already spilled those beans, and besides, I couldn’t for the life of me remember what my name was. I flashed back to the coffee shop, blushing even more, which made Kim giggle. From the smirk on his face, I could tell Michael was enjoying my discomfort. Boys are just evil.

“You’re Airel? I heard you got sick yesterday.” The smirk took on just the slightest hint of compassion, which nearly killed me. “You okay today?” Great, he knew I was a sicko… that meant the whole school knew. Perfect.
