Blog Tour: Joe by HD Gordon Excerpt + Giveaway

Joe is the brand new book in a brand new series by the awesome HD Gordon, author of the Alexa Montrgomery Saga

From Goodreads:
From the author of the Alexa Montgomery Saga, comes a book that will take you into the mind of a geniune pyschopath, the lives of six ordinary people, and the world of a very special girl named Joe.

Joe is seemingly an ordinary college student. She works, studies and reads. But in between these activities Joe has a gift that promises to add a dose of color to her life at any given moment. Joe sees things before they happen. Bad things, and the worst thing she has ever faced is just around the corner. Someone is planning a massacre at the college university that Joe attends, and the only person with a hope of stopping the pyschopath is her.

Oh, the beauty of foresight. More like a curse. Joe has four days to figure out the mystery, make plans to take down the pyscho, and save the lives of people. People like you and me. Ordinary people.

I for one am sooooo excited to read this book and I woke up this morning to a review copy sitting in my inbox waiting for me. I will be starting it very soon.
But for now I have an exclusive excerpt for you.......

No, it will never stop. As long as you have this gift, it will never stop. And when you get out into the big ole world, Baby, it’s just going to get worse. Evil is not just a thing of fairytales. Evil is real and it walks among us. Evil is jealousy and hate and fear and fire. Yes, evil is fire. You saw it in his eyes. The fire reflected from those jealous, hateful eyes, and whether or not you want it to, it’s going to happen. So,
What now? What are you going to do now?

Excited????????

Twain's Feast by Andrew Beahrs (Book Review)

Beahrs, Andrew. Twain's Feast: Searching for America's Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens. New York: Penguin Group USA, 2011.

Author Andrew Beahrs scoured Twain's books for food references. He then set out to investigate the foods as they came to be part of the American landscape of eating, how they were in Twain's era, and how they are in today's landscape if they still exist or why they are not as important if they are gone or less significant. He includes recipes from 19th century cookbooks as well. The book had an interesting premise, and the author did a good job in parts of the narrative. In other parts, he droned on a bit too long and failed to keep the reader interested. No numbered or asterisked citations were given but there were end notes with page numbers, a few words from the line, and references. This did not follow any acceptable method of citation. I found it totally unacceptable and lowered my rating by 1/2 star to reflect this major flaw. (2.5 of 5 stars)

The Museum in Fort Lauderdale

The museum at the Old Fort Lauderdale Village managed by the historical society was originally built in 1905 as the New River Inn. Visitors can choose a tour with a guide when one is available or take a self-guided tour. It is really not a problem because many of the exhibits feature interactive recordings that provide a background for the items in that part of the room. One of the things I learned through the film was that the original fort was built by 200 Tennessee Volunteers who had come to the area in the Seminole Wars in 1838.

A Body Surrounded by Water by Eric Wright (Book Review)

Wright, Eric. A Body Surrounded by Water. Toronto: HarperCollins Canada, 1988.

Charlie Salter is vacationing on Prince Edward Island where several burglaries have taken place. A body is found, and Salter's father-in-law tells Charlie about the purchase of a seal in which he, the deceased, and one other individual had been involved. The deceased had recently been to Toronto to pick up their purchase, but it is not found in his home. Are the burglaries and homicide related? Charlie assists the local Mounties in their investigation. This would a good way to pass two or three hours. The book is relatively short, and the mystery is not very complex. I enjoyed the PEI setting.   (3 of 5 stars)

Several people have told me this is Wright's weakest in the series.

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society

Recently when a friend and I went to Florida for a library conference, we had a little time before we could check into the hotel where we were spending the evening. We took advantage of the time to visit the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and its nearby museum. The city of Fort Lauderdale is a relatively new city, although the fort dates to the Seminole Wars.

This is the building that houses the society's research facility. They have a small research library at the facility, some Sanborn maps, manuscript collections, photographs, and history files. There is a database to aid in property research.

Endangered Species by Nevada Barr (Book Review)

Barr, Nevada. Endangered Species. New York: Avon, 1998.

Anna is on fire watch (a temporary assignment) at the Cumberland Island National Seashore when a plane goes down. It isn't long until foul play is suspected. In the mean time, Anna's sister, a psychiatrist in New York City, is receiving threats. Anna sends her boyfriend FBI agent Frederick Stanton to investigate. I have read several books in which loggerhead turtles have played a part in the story, and I'm always amazed at the work the volunteers do to help the species survive. I enjoyed the national park setting more than the mystery itself in this one. There are a few amusing scenes as well. It wasn't a bad installment, but it wasn't my favorite either.   (3.5 of 5 stars)

From Goodreads:
A simple mission turned deadly.

Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

"I was falling for the one guy in the world I had never expected to fall for. And I was falling hard."

I really don't know what to say when thinking about this book. I had heard great things about this book but after reading so many vampire books I was completely prepared for this to be just another vampire book. I was completely surprised and ended up loving this book.

Vampire Dawn has always been trained to be her father's second-in-command. So when an important mission comes up and Dawn is sent to do it she thinks her life is finally going to begin. What she doesn't count on is her life changing forever and her life being put in grave danger. Trying to train her new vampire friends to protect the town of Angel Creek Dawn finds herself torn between two guys, Ethan, the human who is crushing hard on Dawn and the uptight mysterious vampire Sebastian who Dawn feels a strange connection to. Can she sort out her tangled feelings and protect her life?

I was really consumed by this story and ended up reading it one sitting. I couldn't put it down and was completely hooked from page one. Ada is such a fantastic author and she completely sucks you in from the prologue. Using foreshadowing to show us a glimpse of what is to come was such a fantastic way to start this book and I just couldn't stop reading and needed to know what was going to happen. This book is sweet, beautiful and exciting. I loved seeing the relationships between the characters develop and loved that the characters grew so much throughout the book.

Dawn is such a fantastic lead character and I loved her. She is just fantastic. She is strong and doesn't fear change. She thrives under pressure and she definitely isn't one of these YA characters who sits around waiting for a guy to save her. When she is in danger she takes charge of the situation and acts to help her friends. I really loved her and she is one of my favourite YA lead characters. I felt like Dawn really grew throughout this book. She started as the innocent daddy's girl who led a very sheltered life and she grew up a lot and ended up the strong-willed action girl who would stop at nothing to solve the problem and help her friends.

The guys. This is what every girl wants to hear about for the books. Well in this book there are two completely swoon-worthy guys and I fell in love with them both. Ethan is the cutest, sweetest character ever. He's so adorable and from the moment we met him in the book I was constantly going awww. BUT there was something about him that I didn't trust throughout the book and I turned out to be right but at the end I still loved him.
Sebastian on the other hand... WOW! I just completely fell in lust... er... I mean Love from the first moment. I liked the book a whole lot and then we met Sebastian and I immediately loved it. He is hot, mysterious, brooding and I just loved him. The more of Sebastian that I read the more I totally loved him.

This book was completely amazing and I couldn't put it down. It's amazing in terms of the relationships and I totally loved every character in it. The thing I loved most about ReVamped is that it is fast-paced and action-packed. I was sat holding my breath waiting to find out what was going to happen. I loved every moment of this book. It is no ordinary vampire book. It's completely unique and I loved that. It's so difficult to find an original vampire story and at times I feel like the whole vampire thing has been overdone and get a little bored of it. ReVamped is amazing and unique and it has me hanging on for book 2.
A must-read

One Bad Apple by Sheila Connolly (Book Review)

Connolly, Sheila. One Bad Apple. New York: Berkley, 2008.

Meg Corey lost her Boston banking job through a corporate merger and downsizing. She moves to western Massachusetts to renovate an inherited property in Granford so that she and her mother can sell it. She's only been there a few weeks when a body of someone she knew very well ends up in her newly installed septic tank. With herself and the plumber Seth as the chief suspects in a community that does not know her well, she knows that she needs to find the real murderer and clear her name. From Goodreads:
In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

Wow! What can I say about this book? It is absolutely awesome. That is definitely the first word that comes to mind when I think of Moon Dwellers.

Adele, a Moon dweller, has been sentenced to life in the Pen. She has come to terms with what her life is going to be like. But then she sees Tristan. Son of the president, he would never notice her right? But when their eyes meet for a split second something happens, they feel a connection. Now with her new found friends in the pen Adele is determined to escape the pen, find her family and bring them back together. But will she be able to succeed and will she be able to find Tristan and see if he feels the same, or will she be doomed to spend life behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit?

I really enjoyed this book. It was fantastic. I was drawn into this new dystopian world from the first chapter and was intrigued as to find out what was going to happen. This was the first book I have read by Davis Estes and I will definitely be reading his other work as well, I was amazed by his ability to completely hook me to the story within a few pages and have me sat on the edge of my seat unable to put the book down as I desperately needed to know what was going to happen. I am definitely a fan now.

I loved the characters in this book and how none of them is how they seem. I loved Adele and I really connected with her and felt through her. I loved how we figured more and more about this world and the other characters through her journey. I felt like everything she was going through I was going through as well and I needed to know what happened to her.
I really loved Tristan as well and how he is definitely not what you would expect from him, being the president’s daughter and I loved how you found more about his good side and how he wanted to see change more as you went through the journey with him.
I really loved that this book is told from a split perspective. I really love books told from multiple perspectives as I feel like you can get two sides of the story and really feel like you are going on two different journeys at the same time. This is definitely the case in this book. You are going on Adele’s journey of putting her family back together as well as going on Tristan’s journey to defy his father and chase after what is right.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I started this book but it definitely was not the amazing new series that I found. I will definitely be following Adele and Tristan’s story right to the end and I cannot wait to find out what happens next. An amazing start to a new series and I can’t wait to read more.

After all the great reviews I already had read about this book I was really glad when I got an ARC to read for a blog tour. I had high expectation of this book, but it certainly was a great read with an original story.

Let me start with the story, it is a unique dystophia story. I really liked it, but I think there was a bit too much focus "love at first sight". Both characters practically are in love with each other without knowing each other. I am not a fan of insta love, so I didn't like this part of the story. Luckily there where enough great parts to compensate. Although at times it was a bit boring and I felt like there was just missing something that would've made the book awesome.

When I think about the story I also immediately think about world building. I love world building and it is certainly something a good dystophia novel should have. Well let me say the world building was great. I loved the world and it was such an unique world. We even get an explantion for how the world came to be. We get enough world building, but I still would've liked to see more how the different classes live, I hope we get more of that in the next book.

And then the characters, almost from the beginning I loved the characters. There is so much depth to them and they all have their own unique personality. And from the two main characters we get enough background to also understand why they are the way they are. Adele was such a strong female characters, I really recommend this book for those who love strong female characters. She is strong in mind and body, knows how to fight, but never initiates a fight. I also liked Tristan and the fact that he don't wants to be like his father, but clearly thinks for himself. I still think that it is a bit strange he left everything he knew just to chase a girl, but that's my opinion. The side characters where also great, they had this characteristics that made them unique and I liked learning more about them.
There where a few characters that I didn't like. Like Tristans father and "the evil guy". I just really couldn't understand why they acted like they did. And they both seemed a bit simple characters, I didn't feel like there was much depth to them.

This book uses multiple perspectives. I am a huge fan of multiple perspectives, but I think the author could've used it a bit better. I really like seeing both Tristan and Adele's perspective, it makes the story more complete and we understand them both. We also see two different stories and perspectives. The thing I didn't like about the multiple POV's is that sometimes we get to see events from both their perspectives. First we see one of their POV's and then it stwiches to the other POV and some of the events we already saw we now see from another side. Sometime it works, but most of the times I felt like it disrupted the flow of the story a bit. Also the author uses cliffhangers a bit too  e-often, many chapters end with a small clifhanger and we get the other's POV, while I just wanted to see more from the current POV.

To conclude: a great and original story. I loved the world building and the characters. I do think there was a bit too much focus on the insta love and I think the multiple POV's could've been done better. Overal I really enjoyed the book and am curious what will happen in the next book.

A cruise ship. A beautiful island. Two sexy guys. What could possibly go wrong?

In the Bermuda Triangle—a lot.

Hoping to leave behind the reminders of her crappy life--her father's death years ago, her mother's medical problems, and the loser who’s practically stalking her--seventeen-year-old Autumn Taylor hops on a ship with her sister for a little distraction. When she wakes up in the Bermuda Triangle, she fears she's gone nuts for more than one reason: that loser’s suddenly claiming they're a happy couple... a hot guy is wrapping his arms around her and saying "Happy Anniversary"... and suddenly, she’s full of bruises, losing her hair, and getting IV medication. Autumn visits the ship's doctor, hoping for a pill or a shot to make the craziness go away. Instead, she's warned that these "alternate realities" could become permanent.

She just has to ask herself one question—how the hell is she going to get out of this mess?

I am so excited for this book and the awesome Kate has kindly put me on the ARC list for this book. I am so excited. The cover is beatiful and it sounds amazing.

What do you think?

Murder Makes Waves by Anne George (Book Review)

George, Anne. Murder Makes Waves. New York: Avon Twilight, 1999, c1997.

Mary Alice and Patricia Ann are sisters living in the Birmingham, Alabama area. They need a break and head with Patricia Ann's daughter Haley and friend Frances to Mary Alice's condo in Destin, Florida. Mary Alice is actually attending a writer's conference. It isn't long until they stumble across the body of a friend on the beach. The discover a second body a bit later. This is a thoroughly Southern mystery. It's as much about the Southern friendships and conversation as it is about the mystery. They don't really put themselves in a lot of dangerous situations and leave most of the investigation to the proper authorities. What nosing about they do is just natural Southern gossip that turns up clues. It was a fun mystery for a change of pace and perfect for a beach read. (3.5 of 5 stars)

Blog Tour: Bare Naked Lola by Misa Ramirez

I am so excited to have the amazing Misa Ramirez on K-Books today for the blog tour of her new book Bare Nakes Lola (Lola Cruz Mystery #3).

I have not yet read this series. Yes I know, I totally fail! But I will. SOON! Because I love Misa, she's awesome!

So enough gushing from me, YES I'm totally having a fangirl moment having Misa on my blog! But here's she is to talk about her fantastic new book!

Bare-Naked Lola is the perfect summer read.  Fun, sassy, sexy, and a page turner.  There’s nothing better for the pool!
One of the best things about writing the Lola Cruz Mystery Series is spending time with the characters who’ve become friends and family to me.  Lola, of course, Jack Callaghan, Manny Camacho, Reily, Antonio, Lola’s parents, her cousin, Chely…  I could go on and on!
I created online dating profiles for a lot of the characters and thought I’d share a few of them today.  As I visit different sites to celebrate the release of Bare-Naked Lola, book three in the Lola Cruz series, I’ll be sharing more.  It’s fun to try to decide who each person belongs with.   Hope you’ll follow along!  You can see the tour stops HERE .   < http://www.entangledinromance.com/2012/05/01/the-official-blog-tour-for-bare-naked-lola/>

Best first date: Romantic dinner and a night of salsa dancing.
Confidential File:
Dolores Cruz (Lola for short)
Occupation:
Novice Private Investigator at local firm and part time waitress at family’s restaurant, Abuelita’s
Interviewer’s Comments:
Talk about a bombshell. Ms. Cruz is the whole enchilada, complete with a body that can make a grown man cry. When she mentioned her belly button piercing, this interviewer nearly drooled on his notepad.
Why this woman is single is a mystery. She says she’s got two men vying for her attention (an old high school friend and her boss) and it seems someone’s out to kill her. But other than that…
She’s hot, but this interviewer will stay away from her inbox.

Screen Name: Callaghan_1

Hair Color: Brown
Body Type: Athletic. Running and weight lifting break up long writing stints at the computer

Pets okay. Special attraction to women who like Boxers (dogs and looking hot wearing a pair)

Strong moral compass a must. Need not be based on specific or organized religion
Guitar playing single male seeking attractive, strong, independent woman. Must know her mind and not be afraid to use it. Must want children, be able to engage in conversation using afore mentioned mind, and be wicked sexy. Navel piercing will bring me to my knees.
Best first date: Dinner at Zocolos, followed by playing pool at the Blue Cube. Connection will be best with a woman who’s open to what the night will bring…
Confidential File:
Jack Callaghan
Occupation:
Newspaper Columnist
Interviewer’s Comments:
OMG! Mr. Callaghan is one hot guy. Killer body. Bet he has a six-pack under that t-shirt. Maybe two. I’ll be sending my info to his inbox, pronto. ‘Course he says he’s in love with an old high school friend. Great. But her job is complicated and dangerous, so maybe I have a chance. But then there’s Sarah. Who’s the heck is Sarah?
Mr. Callaghan just moved back to Sacramento to take a job at the newspaper. His column runs on the front page of the Metro. You better believe I’ll be checking it out.
I think I’ll clip out his byline photo for my personal use. *grin, wink, wink*
Intrigued?  I hope so!
